Three weeks ago, we made these sandwiches. I haven't been able to stop thinking about them since, which is why we're having them again today.
I have a dear friend, Jessica, who likes to keep me informed regarding all things Good in life. Case in point? Joy the Baker, a delightful baker-blogger whose recipes and photography have made me drool in equal measure. That her writing is entertaining and has a unique voice kept me coming back for more. This post, about How to Impress a Boy By Baking, piqued my interest... but it was another recipe that completely won my heart. Friends, I speak of Cheddar Black Pepper Biscuits. I don't know what it's like in your neck of the woods today, but around these parts it's rainy and plans to be that way for the whole weekend. I can't think of a better reason to celebrate being indoors and in one's sweatpants than with buttery flaky, cheddar-y, black pepper-y biscuits. Can you?
Just... make them. Make them now. Don't worry about the butter and the shortening and the badness. Just go with the flow, and I promise you will have a completely delightful breakfast experience. I don't consider Bryan and I to be very proficient bakers, but our biscuits still turned out flaky and delicious. We had ours as sandwiches with fried eggs and center-cut bacon and couldn't stop exclaiming to each other about how awesome we were. If you're not into the egg thing, I can assure you that they were also delicious with plain 'ol butter on them, and would probably be lovely with some apple butter for a sweet/savory combo. OR, you could be really dangerous and serve them alongside say, some Cajun Chicken Pasta.
If biscuits aren't your cup of tea I can also speak highly of the Weekend Waffles with Maple Black Pepper Bacon and the (odd-sounding but delicious-tasting) Avocado Pound Cake. The waffles are some of the yummiest I've had at home, and the bacon... well, can you ever really go wrong with bacon? As for the pound cake, the mere mention of it has gotten some wrinkled noses, but I assure you it's a unique and must-try flavor. If the idea of sweet avocados trips you up, try thinking of it as a quick bread, rather than a cake. The texture really falls more into that realm, anyway.
Now that I've vicariously expanded everyone's thighs... it's biscuit time!
Oh, my goodness. That looks WONDERFUL.
